... is commonly known as 21 or Pontoon by many and is one of the most widely played card games in the world.

It is not known exactly where the game originated from although many believe it was from France in the 1700s where it was called "Vingt-et-un", meaning Twenty-One.

Blackjack became popular because of it's mix of skill and luck although luck plays a larger part in the game. The thrill of not knowing what card or cards will be dealt next from the deck or what other players will do increases the luck or chance side of the game.

Vingt-et-un or 21 was not too popular when introduced to the U.S.A which meant that the gambling houses had to give some incentives to players to make them play the game at their tables. One of these incentives was a ten to one payout if a player had "Blackjack" which consisted of the Ace of Spades and one of the Black Jacks.

Over a short period of time the game was commonly known as Blackjack because of this incentive although the incentive payout was soon terminated. In todays game a "Blackjack" hand does not necessarily consist of the Ace of Spades and a Black Jack, to have "Blackjack" you may have a variation of any Ace and any card totalling the sum of ten. (Any ten spot or court card will do).
